Ukraine Built a Drone Specifically to Catch Faster Drones
Russia’s jet-powered Shaheds have made an already nasty air-defense equation worse. They outrun propeller-driven attack drones but remain too cheap to justify routinely firing expensive missiles at them.
Breaking Defense reports that Ukrainian manufacturer SkyFall has unveiled the P1-SUN JetKiller, a one-way interceptor built specifically for that target. SkyFall says it can reach 370 kilometers per hour, fly 30 kilometers and carry a 500-gram payload. It has roughly 15 minutes to find an incoming drone and destroy it.
SkyFall also says the design has downed more than a dozen jet-powered Shaheds. That combat claim has not been independently verified. The confirmed development is narrower but still important: drone-on-drone interception is becoming a specialized product category, not merely an improvised tactic.
If JetKiller works at scale, Ukraine can reserve scarce missile interceptors for cruise missiles and aircraft while assigning cheaper targets to cheaper defenders. If it fails, the reasons will be familiar—difficult targeting, electronic interference or production that cannot keep pace with Russian launches.
Watch for verified intercept footage, unit cost and sustained monthly output. Speed catches the target; economics determine whether the defense survives the campaign.
The Navy Put $17 Million Behind a Much Bigger Laser
The Office of Naval Research put $17.1 million more behind a naval laser program. On Monday, it awarded Attalon a contract modification for SONGBOW, a directed-energy program developing pulsed fiber lasers and the hardware needed to hold their beams on moving targets.
The funded work will integrate a 50-kilowatt laser with a beam-control assembly, according to the U.S. Department of War’s contract notice. The longer-term objective is a 400-kilowatt subsystem, with the current work scheduled for completion in January 2028.
That power matters. Lower-energy lasers can tackle small drones under favorable conditions; a 400-kilowatt-class weapon could engage tougher targets while giving a ship a defensive “magazine” replenished by electricity rather than missile reloads.
But the contract notice contains no test result. Salt spray, haze, heat, cooling demands and a maneuvering target can turn impressive laboratory output into disappointing operational performance.
Success will be visible when SONGBOW demonstrates the integrated 50-kilowatt system against a representative moving target. Failure will look like another laser program that keeps adding power on paper while its installation date recedes over the horizon.
Nuclear Convoys Are Getting Mobile Counter-Drone Defenses
Nuclear convoys are now preparing for threats from above. Kratos Defense & Security Solutions has received an approximately $156 million contract from the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration, MarketWatch reported. The customer is the Office of Secure Transportation, which moves nuclear weapons, components and special nuclear material inside the United States. The reported deliverable is mobile counter-drone equipment for Project Solar Shield. Technical details and fielding locations have not been disclosed.
The strategic change is easy to miss. Nuclear convoys have long planned for roadside attacks, armed assaults and insider threats; small drones add surveillance, distraction and airborne attack from directions traditional convoy security was not built to cover.
If Kratos delivers a system that can detect and defeat drones while moving, the technology could spread to missile transports, military logistics columns and other high-value convoys. Non-adoption would suggest that false alarms, electronic interference or integration problems make mobile defense less reliable than its fixed-site equivalent.
Watch for operational testing with the Office of Secure Transportation. A truck-mounted system is not truly mobile counter-drone defense until it works while the convoy is moving.
Britain Picked a Battlefield-Tested Drone Over Another Long Development Cycle
Britain chose a drone with battlefield experience over another long development cycle. The British Ministry of Defence has selected Tekever’s AR5 surveillance drone to replace Watchkeeper, Breaking Defense reports. The planned initial order covers six AR5s, with as many as 24 expected by 2029 under a program potentially worth £400 million, or roughly $533 million. (apnews.com)
Tekever says the AR5 can remain airborne for up to 20 hours and carry 50 kilograms of sensors or communications equipment. More important than the brochure is where it has flown: Ukraine has used the aircraft in an environment filled with jamming, poor weather and hostile air defenses.
If Britain moves quickly, combat experience could become a shortcut through a procurement system notorious for taking years to deliver technology that is obsolete on arrival.
